Visa Holders Urged to Act Before December 31 Deadline
Visa holders in the UK have been given a crucial deadline to take action by the Home Office. As of December 31, many visas, including biometric residence permits (BRPs) and biometric residence cards (BRCs), are set to expire. The Home Office is pushing for millions of visa holders to transition to the eVisa system, a digital proof of immigration status that aims to streamline border processes.
The Home Office issued a warning this week, urging the remaining 3.1 million people who have not made the switch to do so before the end of the year. This transition is vital to ensure visa holders can benefit from the convenience and security that eVisas offer. The department emphasized that parents or guardians of children using BRPs or BRCs must take action on behalf of these minors.
For those with indefinite leave to remain who currently use ink stamps or passport vignettes as proof of their rights in the UK, the Home Office advises applying for a No Time Limit to access an eVisa. While switching to eVisas is a free process that can be completed online, it is essential for all visa holders to make the transition before the looming deadline.
Transition Deadline Extension
Although the deadline for visa holders to switch to eVisas is December 31, airlines and other carriers will provisionally accept expired BRPs and EU Settlement Scheme BRCs until March 31, 2025. This temporary extension aims to facilitate a smoother transition for travelers, but officials stress that the deadline remains under review and is subject to change.
Minister’s Encouraging Words
Seema Malhotra MP, Minister for Migration and Citizenship, acknowledged the progress made by over 3.1 million people who have already transitioned to eVisas. She highlighted the convenience and security benefits of eVisas and assured visa holders that support and guidance are readily available for those yet to make the switch.
“I have been listening to feedback from visa holders, stakeholders, and MPs, and we are continually streamlining and adapting to ensure this is a smooth transition,” stated Minister Malhotra. She also confirmed greater flexibility on carriers accepting expired documents to ease international travel while maintaining border security standards.
As the deadline approaches, visa holders are urged to take immediate action to transition to eVisas and avoid any disruptions to their immigration status. By embracing this digital proof of immigration, visa holders can enjoy enhanced security and convenience while crossing borders seamlessly.
