Energy customers in the UK have the potential to save over £100 on their heating bills by making a small adjustment to their thermostats. Citizens Advice suggests that by reducing the thermostat by just 1 degree Celsius, individuals can cut their energy bills by around 10%. A study conducted by the University College of London analyzed thermostat data from 13,000 homes nationwide and found that maintaining temperatures between 22C and 18C could lead to average savings of about £130.

The study also revealed that for every square meter of space in a household, approximately £1.10 less in gas and 40p less in electricity are used when the thermostat temperature is decreased by 1C. However, the amount saved may vary depending on factors such as the size of the home, outdoor temperature, and duration of heating usage.

It is recommended by the NHS to keep homes at a minimum of 18C during winter to ensure warmth and health. Keeping windows closed during cold nights is advised to prevent inhaling cold air, which can be detrimental to health and increase the risk of chest infections. Wearing multiple thin layers of clothing made from materials like cotton, wool, or fleece is effective in maintaining body heat. Additionally, wearing well-fitting slippers and shoes with grip is recommended to prevent slipping while keeping warm.

For individuals with health conditions that may be exacerbated by cold temperatures, Citizens Advice suggests not setting the thermostat below 21C. Andy Ellis from Posh.co.uk emphasizes the importance of energy conservation during the winter season to reduce heating bills. Simple measures such as insulating rooms and sealing drafts can help families enjoy a warm and cozy home without the added stress of high energy costs. By being mindful of energy consumption, households can identify practical ways to save money throughout the winter season.
