Bristol Cathedral Enhances Accessibility with Generous Donation
Bristol Cathedral has recently received a substantial donation of nearly half a million pounds from the Julia Rausing Trust, set up in honor of one of Britain’s wealthiest women, Julia Rausing. The trust, established following Julia’s passing earlier this year, has pledged to give away £100 million annually, with this specific grant aimed at improving access to medieval sections of the cathedral.
The £475,000 donation will fund various enhancements, including the installation of a new platform lift inside the historic building and renovations to raise the floor of the cloister to its original Victorian level. These improvements will create a more inclusive environment, particularly for individuals with mobility challenges, allowing them to navigate seamlessly from the cathedral’s nave to the ground floor of the south part without encountering obstacles like stairs or level changes.

The Dean of Bristol, the Very Revd Dr Mandy Ford, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced accessibility at the cathedral, noting that current facilities require wheelchair users to navigate a cumbersome route outdoors to access essential amenities like restrooms, the cafe, and the Chapter House. Dr. Ford expressed gratitude to The Julia Rausing Trust for their generous contribution, highlighting the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors.
Frances Rosewell, the cathedral’s visitor experience director, underscored the significance of the Access for All project, which aims to raise approximately £750,000 to further enhance accessibility and ensure the cathedral’s long-term sustainability.
