A Conservative Club in Baguley has been thrust into the spotlight after a chaotic and violent altercation unfolded, resulting in severe injuries and police involvement. The incident, which occurred on November 4 at The Winston Club, saw men engaging in a heated brawl that escalated to the point of individuals reportedly stomping on each other’s heads, causing significant harm.
Police Intervention and Consequences
Law enforcement officers were called to the scene following reports of a fierce fight that led to extensive damage to the club’s facilities. PC Alan Isherwood, in a statement submitted to the local authority, detailed the tumultuous events that transpired during an organized gathering that combined a birthday celebration with a funeral service. The altercation began inside the venue but quickly spilled outside after troublemakers were removed, resulting in a broader confrontation that saw the owner’s daughter being assaulted amidst the chaos.
Several individuals attempted to intervene and break up the fight, but their efforts only fueled the conflict further. The volatile situation culminated in severe injuries for four people, including a broken ankle, a fractured cheekbone, and a cerebral hemorrhage, necessitating hospitalization, according to a council briefing.
Security Measures and Controversy
In response to the incident, club management faced scrutiny from the Manchester council, prompting an urgent review of their licensing conditions. PC Isherwood recommended the addition of a trained security guard for gatherings exceeding 40 attendees, as well as enhanced CCTV installation to maintain order and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
However, the proposal to hire security personnel at £25 per hour was met with resistance from Colette Renton, representing the club, who argued that such measures were financially burdensome and disproportionate to the isolated incident that prompted the council’s decision. Despite acknowledging the need to ensure public safety, Renton contended that imposing costly conditions on the club based on a single night of violence was unjust and set them up for failure.
Council Mandates and Future Precautions
In light of the altercation, council members mandated that the club employ security for events with more than 60 attendees, provide additional staff training for security-related situations, and install CCTV cameras in all public areas of the premises to monitor and deter potential conflicts.
